The PhD program in Mechanical Engineering is designed to train specialists in Mechanical Engineering with high professional qualifications, high skills, independent research and the ability to solve the scientific and practical issues relate to mechanical engineering.
PART I: GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING PROGRAM

2. Training objectives
 
2.1. General objectives
 
- The PhD program in Mechanical Engineering is designed to train specialists in Mechanical Engineering with high professional qualifications, high skills, independent research and the ability to solve the scientific and practical issues relate to mechanical engineering.
 
- People who has PhD in Mechanical Engineering can work in related fields such as mechanics, construction, structural engineering, marine engineering, manufacturing engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, control engineering, automation, chemical, aerospace, space technology of corporations, domestic and foreign enterprises; be able to operate, lead research groups; participate in teaching, researching at universities and research institutes; capable of summarized thinking, be able to be highly adaptable, capable of good service, capable of self-study, self-training, self-developing.
 
2.2. Specific objectives
 
The PhD program in Engineering Mechanics is intended to provide PhD students with the knowledge, abilities, skills and qualities:
 
2.2.1. About knowledge
 
Equip PhD students with the capacity for scientific research, updating, improving and completing basic knowledge; have in-depth understanding about specialized knowledge; highly qualified in theory and practice, capable of creating and solving scientific and technological problems and guiding professional activities in the field of engineering mechanics, sufficient knowledge for further study post-doctoral degree domestically and internationally.
 
2.2.2. About abilities
 
Ability to think independently and creatively in scientific research in the field of mechanical engineering; highly qualified specialists for teaching, research, consulting or leadership at universities, institutes, and projects in the fields of engineering.
 
2.2.3. About skills
 
Equipped with theoretical, practical, analytical, modeling, mathematical and empirical skills in mechanics. Be able to develop research outline, team leadership skills, organizational skills in implementing research projects, applying and solving technical problems related to mechanics.
 
2.2.4. About morality
 
Good sense of observance of laws; have high professional ethics, love the jobs, working style seriously and scientifically, honest and have the will to rise up.
 
3. Enrollment information
 
3.1. Forms for admission
 
- People who have master's degree: reviewing professional records as regulations by VNU
 
- People who have bachelor degree: combination of entrance examination and professional records reviewing
 
- Basic Subject I: Advanced Mathematics II
 
- Basic Subject II: Applied Mechanics
 
- Foreign Language: English
 
- Reviewing professional records according to regulations of VNU
 
3.2. Entrance requirements
 
- Applicants who hold a master's degree in the field of Engineering Mechanics or suitable majors.
 
- Applicants with official master's degree in close to Engineering Mechanics.
 
- Applicants graduated from the regular university system in Engineering Mechanics or suitable with Engineering Mechanics, graduated with a good result, have at least one article published in scientific journals or academic conferences scientific collections. The content of the article must be suitable with the specialization of the candidate registration and the journals are in the list of journals recognized by the State Council for Professor Title or national/ international specialized conference with ISBN indicator, have criticism.
 
- Other qualifications and seniority are defined by VNU regulations.

- Relevant specialities: Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechatronics, Automation, Construction, Transportation, Mechanical Engineering, Machine Manufacturing, Marine Engineering, Ship Engineering, Energy, Environment; Aerospace.
 
- Close specialities: Theoretical Mechanics, Elastic Theory, Materials Strength, Structural Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics.
 
3.4. Estimated enrollment scale: 7 PhD students per year

 
PART II: STANDARD OUTPUT OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM
 
1. Requirements for thesis quality:
 
- The thesis must be an independent scientific research work that contributes to solve the scientific, theoretical or practical problems, contributing to the formation and formulation of new theoretical and experimental frameworks.
 
- The thesis topic must be approved by the professional subcommittee in the process of consideration for PhD training, which shall be decided by the head of the training unit and the instructor.
 
- The research results in the thesis must be the result of the author's own work obtained mainly during the training period. If using other people's materials, results (tables, formulas, graphs and other documents), researchers must be explicitly approved by the author and fully cited. If the these is a scientific work or a part of the scientific work of a collective in which the author contributes the main part, he / she must present documents expressing the agreement of the members of that collective which allow the author to use those results to write the thesis.
 
- The thesis must be an innovative scientific research project of PhD students' own work, which has contributed theoretically and practically in the field of research, or a new valuable solution in the development of scientific knowledge of mechanical engineering, creatively solving technical problems today.
 
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of advanced knowledge and research methods in addressing specific research topics.
 
- The results of the thesis are valid for the field of Mechanical Engineering both theoretically and practically, valuable reference in solving practical problems today.
 
- Thesis is not more than 150 A4 pages, not including the appendix, of which at least 50% of the papers present their findings and arguments in this outline: Introduction, Overview about research topics, Content, Research results, Conclusions and Recommendations, List of research works announcing results of the thesis, List of references and appendices (if any). The thesis summary is not more than 24 pages A5 reflects the structure, composition and contents of the thesis, have to mention the whole conclusion of the thesis. Thesis information is about 3 to 5 pages (300 to 500 words) in Vietnamese and English presenting the basic content, new contents and the most important contributions of the thesis.
 
- Minimum publication (during the period of PhD students): 02 papers about research results of the thesis in the specialized scientific journals, of which at least 01 post in the scientific journal in the category of articles ISI / Scopus or 02 reports in the international prestigious symposium with arguments, which has ISBN code; or 02 articles published in prestigious scientific journals of foreign countries.
 
2. Requirements for specialized knowledge
 
a. General knowledge in VNU (for PhD students who just have bachelor degree)
 
- Knowledge of political theory
 
+ Understand the scientific knowledge system of the basic principles of Marxism-Leninism;
 
+ Understanding the basic, systematic knowledge of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morals, cultural values, the basic contents of the revolutionary line of the Communist Party of Vietnam, in the period of innovation in some basic areas of social life.
 
- Knowledge of foreign languages (B1):
 
+ Understand the main ideas in the language that students are studying, master the communication in work and everyday life.
 
+ Handles most situations that may occur when using the language;
 
+ Simply write links about familiar topics or personal interests;
 
+ Describe the experiences, events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and can briefly explain the reasons, explain their ideas and plans.
 
+ Write clear, detailed text with a variety of topics and be able to explain one's point of view, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the different options.
 
b. Specialized groups knowledge (for PhD students who just have bachelor degree)
 
- Specialized group knowledge including supplementary modules, enhancing the basic knowledge and interdisciplinary applied mathematics: physics-math methods in Mechanics, Calculus approximation methods and numerical methods .
 
- Understanding specialized English materials, capable of writing professional issues in English in the form of a short report in a scientific style; know some terms to use professional materials in foreign languages in the major/ interdisciplinary major;
 
c. Specialized knowledge (for PhD students who just have bachelor degree)
 
- Specialized subjects include specialized modules for Engineering Mechanic and technical Internships to reinforce theoretical knowledge, practical experience of knowledge learned, and application of that knowledge into practice. Equipped with knowledge to be able to continue studying for a doctorate in Engineering Mechanics.
 
d. Additional knowledge
 
- Well apply and innovate interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary knowledge, as well as basic knowledge of Engineering Mechanics in practical research, teaching and work.
 
- Well apply knowledge of engineering mechanics to solve related scientific and technical problems.
 
- Well apply and innovate technical knowledge to form ideas, technical solutions, develop, organize and evaluate projects, programs or solutions for technical problems which relate to mechanics.
 
e. Module knowledge and PhD topics
 
- Compulsory courses: PhD students have new knowledges in the field of specialization, advanced theoretical, research methodologies and the ability to apply essential, critical scientific research methods in the field of study.
 
- Optional Topics: PhD students are deeply aware of new knowledge directly related to PhD theses, enhance their scientific research capacity and have appropriate solutions to solve some contents of theses topic.
 
- Literature review: PhD students grasp deeply the content of the research
 
about situations and issues related to the dissertation topic, be able to demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate the research works of domestic and foreign authors related to theses topics, addressing remaining issues, finding out the problems that the thesis should focus on studying and solving.
 
3. Requirements for research capability
 
- Have high skills in searching for materials and gathering information on relevant professional issues.
 
- Have good skills in detecting, analyzing, generalizing, evaluating and resolving issues related to the development of the unit's strategy and plans, technical issues in the field of engineering mechanics.
 
- Have high skills in overall thinking, logical thinking and analysis, multidimensional analysis and systems analysis.
 
- Ability to apply scientifically and creatively the knowledge and skills in accordance with assigned tasks; having deep expertise in leading and managing research and development activities for medium and large scale projects in related fields.
 
4. Requirements for the skills
 
- Professional skills: Having the skills to organize and arrange the works in a scientific way; fluency in English; to use and apply computer proficiently in professional activities and social communication. Ability to approach modern issues of Engineering Mechanics. Capability to proceed and guide experiments, researches, teaching and knowledge discovery.
 
- Additional Skills:
 
+ Having scientific thinking, creativity and critical thinking, critical methodology; well-managed time and resources; have the necessary personal skills such as adaptation to practice, ability to use computer tools to serve specialized works and communication; have skills to integrate into the community. Recognize and exploit the relationship between technical solutions and economic, social and environmental factors, build and develop internal and external relations within and outside the professional field.
 
+ Ability to use English and specialized English fluently, with fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
 
+ Have good skills to form effective working groups, promote teamwork and team development; High ability to lead groups or companies to fulfill assigned tasks.
 
+ Good skills in written communication, via email / media, communication strategies, good presentation skills in the field of specialization;
 
5. Morality requirements
 
- Citizen responsibility: High accountability and law compliance; to propose ideas and solutions and mobilize people to participate in national construction.
 
- Responsibility, ethics, sense and professional behavior, serving attitude: Having good moral qualities, humble, enthusiastic, honest and the love for work; have professional ethics, high responsibility and credibility in work, enthusiasm and passion for work.
 

PART III: CONTENT OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM
 
1. Summary of training program requirements
 
1.1. For PhD students without a master's degree:
 
Learners must complete the modules of the master's degree program and the content of the PhD program.
 
Total credits must accumulate: 138 credits, of which:
 
- Part 1: Additional modules: 42 credits
 
+ General knowledge: 3 credits
 
+ Basic and specialized knowledge: 39 credits
 
- Part 2: Research modules, topics and essay overview: 16 credits
 
+ Research modules: 8 credits
 
• Mandatory: 6 credits
 
• Optional: 2 credits
 
+ Research topic: 6 credits
 
+ Essay overview: 2 credits
 
- Part 3: Scientific research (compulsory for PhD students but not counted as credits in training program).
 
- Part 4: Participation in professional activities, teaching assistants, and training support (compulsory for PhD students, but not counted as credits in the training program).
 
- Part 5: PhD thesis: 80 credits
 
1.2. For PhD students with master's degree closed to Engineering Mechanics:
 
Total credits must accumulate: 105 credits, of which:
 
- Part 1: Additional modules: 9 credits
 
- Part 2: Research modules, topics and essay overview: 16 credits
 
+ Research modules: 8 credits
 
• Mandatory: 6 credits
 
• Optional: 2 credits
 
+ Research topics: 6 credits
 
+ Essay overview: 2 credits
 
- Part 3: Scientific research (compulsory for PhD students but not counted as credits in training programs).
 
- Part 4: Participation in professional activities, teaching assistant, and training support (compulsory for PhD students, but not counted as credits in the training program).
 
- Part 5: PhD thesis: 80 credits
 
1.3. For PhD students with master's degree as Engineering Mechanics or relevant:
 
Total credits must accumulate: 96 credits, of which:
 
- Part 1: Research modules, topics and essay overview: 16 credits
 
+ Research modules: 8 credits
 
• Mandatory: 6 credits
 
• Optional: 2 credits
 
+ Research topics: 6 credits
 
+ Essay overview: 2 credits
 
- Part 2: Scientific research (compulsory for PhD students but not counted as credits in training programs).
 
- Part 3: Participation in professional activities, teaching assistant, and training support (compulsory for PhD students, but not counted as credits in the training program).
 
- Part 4: PhD thesis: 80 credits
 
Scientific Research directions
 
With a specific feature as a coordinating faculty, from the date of establishment, cadres and staff of the Faculty of Engineering Mechanics and Automation have closely cooperated with partner institutes in implementing many key scientific research topics at national level.

River Mechanics, Marine Mechanics, Atmospheric and Environmental engineering;
 
Technical diagnosis of constructions;
 
Mechanics of industrial gas (oil and gas exploitation and transportation),
 
Water and Air treatment technology
 
Predictive flood technology to mitigate the disasters;
 
Nuclear safety technology in nuclear power plants;
 
Aerospace;
 
Automation and Robotics;
 
Materials Mechanics and Composite Structure.
 
Research activities and deploying applications:
 
With a specific feature as a coordinating faculty, from the date of establishment, cadres and staff of the Faculty of Engineering Mechanics and Automation have closely cooperated with partner institutes in implementing many key scientific research topics at national level of KC.01, KC.03, KC.05, KC.09; Faculty members are in charge of many NCCB research topics funded by the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED); test projects.
 
Over the past 10 years, there have been over 250 scientific papers in national and international magazines and conferences.
